Welcome everyone to my article..I did not want to address this situation but a certain email got me upset so now I have something to write about. My blog (InternetGoon) first started out as an experiment, just putting my thoughts, sharing my ideas, all of that good stuff...When it came to the point where I wanted to expand some things about the blog I did..Put an email for people to contact me for artists to submit. I loved it. Artists were introducing themselves to me and asking me to listen to their music because they respected my taste and wanted to be on the blog. I'm not mad at that all...I love it...
But I have to address something that has nothing to deal with the current rappers/DJ's/associates I deal with and have formed relationships with. There are a lot of rappers in today's world, shit..I even rapped on one of my mixtapes but it was all for fun...I realize that if you are an up and coming rapper you have to grind a lot which means creating an online presence, a fanbase, and more. Let me give you some advice. If you don't have a fanbase at all then maybe you want to form that first. Friends and family. When I started this blog, I pushed it to friends and family..Got their support and cosigns. If I didn't then I would have stopped.
I want to focus on the online shit because that deals with me. I'm sure if you're a rapper you have an email that you send your music from. And you have a whole database of blogger's emails that you want to contact. Well first off, make sure to introduce yourself and all that shit. If I have no idea who you are or why you are sending me stuff then I won't give a damn about your music. It's all about your approach. I know some rappers who like to make each email personal, and I know some that send a blast but still try to keep it professional and formal. Make sure to include the name of the songs, a picture most likely (I don't want to find your pic) and maybe more details.
Sending an email blast is pretty easy, get some emails, put in the email and press send. Well learn how to BCC that joint. I had to learn just like you about BCC. And if you don't know what the deal is with that then hit up my twitter or email me because I don't mind explaining it.
Now bloggers get a lot of email. Or they have a certain protocol that they want submissions to follow. But the worst thing to do is send music over twitter. Meaning that you reply to someone talking about "listen to this new shit" No! It's annoying. And you're sending it to like 100s of people...I have never peeped anyone's music through twitter because we all have a protocol. And it's because you're new. Build some rapport first. For example, if the homie Lyriciss sends me a twitter joint that's fine because we have formed a relationship that not only deals with his rap music. But if a random person sends something then I'm sure it will get avoided. It just doesn't work.
One last thing is that you need to realize the content of the blogger you are sending stuff to. Are you even a fan of their blog? My homies Ice The Villain, Revalation, Whitefolkz, Clif Soulo and basically all the rappers who I post go to my blog (I'm assuming..haha) for the other non-rap related content I put on here. I don't ever force them to read my articles or videos or whatever but they support what I'm trying to do.
The reason for this article was because I was trying to help out this young man who had sent an email blast. The approach was fine, no introduction but I'm not a dick so I listened to his music. Not my cup of tea. Picture attached was horrible. Also I saw the email addresses of the whole email blast. Instead of shunning the homeboy I decided to write him an email:
I usually don't write back but I think I could suggest some things to make this whole process a lot smoother. I don't mind getting tracks or music sent to me because I'm always open to listening to new material whether it be rap, hip hop, pop, R&B, etc. Now I listened to your tracks and I didn't like them. But it's not hate. Just not my cup of tea. But if you're going to send an email blast don't put "this is not my hottest track just give me a chance" That will prevent anyone from listening to it because 1. we want hot tracks 2. you have to be confident in your tracks, even the lackluster ones.
Also, I don't mind email blasts at all but I'll teach you a nice trick. You have to learn how to BCC to the people you send the blasts too. For example, you use Yahoo so I'm sure they have an Add BCC button. Basically you put everyone you want to receive the email in the BCC and you put your own email as the only one in the To. That way it's more clean and the common method that most email blasters use. Cause I can see you sent it to Karen Civil, and Clinton Sparks and all that.
So how about this. Send me more music cause I'm sure you don't just have 2 songs. And if I like them I'll put them up. No promises though. Also you got to get a better picture. But hopefully you holla back at me. Hope everything goes well.
And it seems like that went right inside one ear and out the other. I got a reply with two other wack songs, a horrible picture, and no comment on what I had just put some thought and time into relaying to him. So I guess it's all fair..I deleted the email he sent and if I get one more I'll just report it as spam, which I've never done. Now what I'm going to do is just send this article back to any up and coming rappers who don't come proper. I'll keep you notified.
