NIGGA (ARTICLE)

Finally I have an article to write...As you can see by the title and the great picture I found on the web it's about a certain word that many people use...I don't know where this article is going to take me or what I'm going to say but put your seat belt on and let's go for a ride...Are you down? YZR!!!

So...Let's get a definition of this word...I'm not talking about the -er version but I guess I'm going to have to because I know some readers don't see a difference between the two..I respect that..Few definitions I've see for the word nigga:

1. Term of endearment
2. Dude..bro
3. a black man with a gold chain on his neck (Tupac Definition)
4. A word used by blacks to maintain racial separation and dwell on events over one hundred years ago.

Goodness...That last one if pretty deep...Oh well...Now I will try to explain why someone uses the word nigga as a term of endearment...Of course we all know that Nigger was used as a derogatory term towards blacks..Racist and just ignorant...But one day some black person decided to switch it up and use it in a way that would not hurt his other black folks...And sometimes I can't even front because it sounds like a good idea...It's taking a word that a whole race has been using against you and taking it, flipping it, and using it to empower their own people..I'm thinking that was the idea of changing it..It's not like he or she was going to start saying nigga like the white people did "HEY NIGGER!!, GET OUT MY HOUSE!" Ya dig? More like, "Wassup my nigga?" -ER is gone from the word and -a is added..That's probably the explanation he gave to his own people asking why he was calling him the N word...Maybe it was even a way to own or take something away from the whites to feel some kind of ownership...Black people were nothing but slaves, no property, weren't even thought of as humans...Maybe something little as changing that word meant a lot to that person and lifted the people up as a whole..Did you ever think of that?! I'm just trying to see it another light instead of the negative shit...

Do I use the word? Yup...To be honest, growing up with mostly black people, going to school and all that it's kind of hard not to pick up these words, slangs or whatever...Do you really think my parents taught me how to curse? Hell no... (Maybe just the word shit) But it's more of the environment that I surrounded myself around...People cursed all the time and since I knew how to say "FUCK" and had some kind of secret ownership to it I used it...I don't remember how I used the word nigga but I'm sure that 95% of my friends were using it when I was growing up..What's weird though is that even the Albanians were using it...Yup..It didn't make sense at the time but I guess they had some kind of pass or whatever...

I listen to rap...I listen to R&B...I listen to pop...I listen to a lot of different kinds of music, and it shows during my shuffle joints of the day...But rap also introduces many people of all kinds to the word nigga... "If I should die don't cry my nigga." Jay Z rapped that...He wasn't using it as a negative thing...It was like he could substitute the word nigga as brother..."Just cause I love my niggas, I shed blood for my niggas" DMX was sheeding blood for niggas? To his brothers..his friends...So I go to school and tell my friends "Wassup nigga" Wassup friend..Wassup brother...Rap music instills some kind of brotherhood within the lyrics..Or used to anyways but that sort of explains what was going on as a young child...And something that's so deeply ingrained as that word is kind of hard to stop using...For me it's hard...If I listen to music I'm going to say it...If I talk amongst friends then I'm going to use it...If I watch the Boondocks I'm going to hear that word a hundred times... (I Love the Boondocks)

I know some black people still hate the word..and I understand why..But at least take the time to understand why I might use it..or why someone else might feel like they are empowering themselves by using it to talk to their friends..And yes, I know we can empower ourselves by going to school, getting an education or other means but yall dig what I'm saying...

What are the white people to do? I have no idea...Just don't use the word...And it's hard as hell...I mean if someone catches you saying the word then there's a chance of someone getting beat up, awkwardness or a quick pass...Or if you're a white person that listens to the same music that I listen to then it's kind of hard not to let one slip once in a while in a context when you're singing.. "Now I ain't saying she a goldigger, but she ain't messing with no broke nigga." Yeah..awkward...I know...I've seen it happen when I'm listening to music, white people are present and they just keep quiet when that word comes across..Do I know if they'll say it if I wasn't there? Hell yeah..If I was white I would use it as secretly as I could...Sing it in my head..shit like that...

What's going to happen? Nigga is going to be used by everybody...Just give us 200 years...Trust me..White people are saying it amongst themselves sometimes...Other black people give them passes and it's going to become an acceptable word to use for everyone...

I do know that I can't use that word in a professional context or educational context..So I know that there is some kind of negative shit going on with the word but it's like something you leave at home..There's a time and place for everything...
