Here In Vain is a story of love, life, war, politics, dreams deferred and dreams captured. Following a young black HIV+ woman's journey as she searches for love and happiness within the structure of the world and her status. This modern day tragic love story is set in a six year period from 2001-2007 and is told by incorporating the traditions of oral history with the flavor of spoken word.
Nina is a struggling waitress but talented poet who is too afraid to take the stage yet needs to share her pain. In her early 20's she's got a hard shell and stories to tell, she's got her issues but still she makes do. She was born too close to the edge and it seems the world's been pushing her ever since.
After a one night stand with a man she never knew, she finds herself on stage to explain and tell her truth. And this is where the story begins. She meets Langston a fellow poet and they strike up a friendship. He has his girlfriend, she has her illness, there is no room for anything more, so they think. The events of 9/11 bring them closer, Nina saves his life, and he in his own way aims to save hers. He joins the army, she in turn fights her own war with words, becoming a well-known poet thinking success will equate happiness, they part ways and go down different roads. They are somewhat star-cross'd lovers and this is the story their paths away and back to one another.
This is not a tale of Capulets and Montagues, it's about the lovers you choose and the love that chooses you. And this girl doesn't have a scarlet letter, instead it's an invisible symbol. This girl is positive, this boy is not, still boy loves girl but can't get what she's got. This is a story about boy and girl and the choices they made in life and love.
From The Readers
" you don't hear anything about [AIDS}, you don't hear people talk about it, its like people not even scared of it anymore its like a back thought now, people just worry about what I got; money, cars whatever…I hear more about Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohen that I do about AIDS" - Gerald Green
"I like that it's raw, because we live in a raw society, where everybody is just wildin, we just do whatever we want to do without thinking about the consequences of what it is we're doing…my moms generation is gonna be like 'I can't believe she just said that, I cant believe she got up there and said that' but I thought it was appropriate for this generation, and the generation to follow." – Lauren Green
"I think that we're past the stage where you can pat people on the back with information sometimes you gotta smack them in the face" …"I think everyone is ready with current administration that we're under where everything is sugarcoated and its so taboo to talk about the issues that our generation is facing, and that's killing our generation…we're the first generation that has to think about using a condom when we have sex." – Natalie Hernandez
